Lady Gaga Tattoos and Their Meanings

Lady Gaga is one of the top Pop Culture icons of this decade, and rightfully so with all the hard work and dedication she puts into not only her music but her image. Lady Gaga has furthered this character she’s created with funky hairstyles, makeup, costumes and even tattoos. To put her own personal spin on the tattoo thing Lady Gaga has made a deal with her father that she will only tattoo the left side of her body to keep her “half ordinary”.  “It was actually per my father’s request,” she said. “He asked that I remain, on one side, slightly normal.” She referred to her left side of her body like her ‘Iggy Pop side’ and her right side (without tattoos) her ‘Marylin Monroe side’.

It is rumored that Lady Gaga got her first tattoo at age 17 when she got a hold of a fake ID. The Tattoo is of a treble clef and is located on the middle of her lower back. The tatt next to the treble clef is a mass of swirling roses that was inked by famous tattoo artist Kat Von D.

Here’s what Kat recalls of tattooing the now infamous pop-star. “I was tattooing this rose on her hip. I’m like, ‘Why did you move out here?’ She said, ‘I moved out here to make it big’,” Von D remembered. “I was like, ‘Yeah, you and everyone else’ or whatever, and she’s like, ‘No, no! I’m here to make it big!’ The next thing you know, a week later, her face is everywhere and I’m like, ‘Dude, she did it! That’s awesome!'”

Lady Gaga’s left shoulder currently has three separate tattoos, a cluster of three daisies, Tokyo Love with a heart, and a DAD tattoo encircled with a heart. The first of the three was the daisies, and because she has never publicly spoken out on why exactly she choose them we can only assume that she loves flowers.

Her next shoulder tatt was the Tokyo Love tattoo which can be considered much more risque!

“That was to celebrate the Haus’s collaboration with legendary Japanese photographer Araki. I was bound by Araki’s personal bondage artist, by several ropes and Japanese knots … Araki photographed me, using a series of several cameras. He did not photograph my image; he photographed my soul. We spent the night with Araki and his friends at a members’ only bar he’s owned for more than 20 years, where he displays his work. Here, he painted me and took Polaroids through the night. I was honored to be the first American woman he’s photographed, and only the second pop artist, in the company of Björk. He signed the Polaroids ‘Tokyo Love,’ and the Haus got tattoos of his marking in celebration.”

Her most recent shoulder tattoo is a tribute to her father. When he was in the hospital battling an illness she told him she was going to get a tattoo in his honor. “He got all teary-eyed and he said, ‘Well, you’re running out of real estate, so don’t get it too big.'”

(It is also interesting to note that on Lady Gaga’s latest album “Born This Way”, the photoshop editor decided to relocate the DAD tattoo below the daisies rather than beside it!) RANDOM

On the inside on Lady Gaga’s left wrist she sports an upside down peace sign, although she says when she looks at it it is the right way. The peace sign tattoo is a tribute to John Lennon of the Beatles, whom she considers a “hero”.

The tattoo on her inner arm is a tribute to her favorite writer. “That one commemorates my favorite writer, Rainer Maria Rilke, a poet and romantic philosopher,”  “In German he writes, ‘Confess to yourself in the deepest hour of the night whether you would have to die if you were forbidden to write. Dig deep into your heart, where the answer spreads its roots in your being, and ask yourself solemnly, Must I write?’ ”

In 2010 Gaga inked “Little Monsters” next to her Rilke tattoo as a tribute to her fans.

The tattoo on Gaga’s upper left thigh, which was done by Bad News Becca on September 6, 2010, is an image of a unicorn with the words “Born This Way” wrapped around the horn.  The tattoo is a commemoration of her third album, Born This Way.

Lady Gaga has said that the unicorn is her “favorite mythical creature.” “I had My Little Ponies. I was obsessed with the idea of a creature that was born with something magical that sort of made them the misfit in the world of the stallion. I’m actually quite obsessed with unicorns. They are in essence a mythical creature. The unicorn is born magical and it’s not the unicorn’s fault and it doesn’t make it any more or less special or any less unique but it can’t help that it was born with that magic.”

Lady Gaga Denies Plastic Surgery

Lady Gaga Horns

Lady Gaga has recently been rocking another new look lately in the form of a type of body modification. She first donned the look at the 2011 Grammy Awards and has since been sporting them at every opportunity available, March Vogue cover-shoot aside. The prosthetics are located on her forehead, cheekbones, and shoulders and give her a rather evil and demonic vibe.

Gaga was also recently interviewed for Harper’s Bazzar Magazine and revealed these startling gems:

On the prosthetics she glues onto her face and body: “Well, first of all, they’re not prosthetics. They’re my bones. They’ve always been inside of me, but I have been waiting for the right time to reveal to the universe who I truly am. They come out when I’m inspired. We all have these bones! They’re the light from inside of us.”

On if she’s ever chopped and rotated her nose: “I have never had plastic surgery, and there are many pop singers who have. I think that promoting insecurity in the form of plastic surgery is infinitely more harmful than an artistic expression related to body modification. And how many models and actresses do you see on magazine covers who have brand-new faces and have had plastic surgery, while I myself have never had any plastic surgery? I am an artist, and I have the ability and the free will to choose the way the world will envision me.”

OH Reeealy Lady Gaga, NO plastic surgery you say…We beg to differ! Check out our post on Lady Gaga Nose Job HERE.
